What's better than getting an A for your final college project? Getting paid for it.

What's better than getting an A for your final college project? Getting paid for it. Just ask ceramist Michal Fargo, who promptly parlayed her ceramic designs from Jerusalem's Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design into merchandise for Fargo Design. The studio now produces her creations for distribution far beyond the classroom.

On a quest for unusual ceramic surfaces, Fargo devised a technique that divides a standard mold into parts. It took 14 to cast the rugged relief of the Naïve pendant fixture's porcelain shade, based on an old-school style. For the Else series of sculptures and vessels, she dispenses with molds entirely. She instead dips 1-inch-thick sponges into a bath of slip, then assembles them into translucent, free-form silhouettes. Ultimately, she expects to broaden her repertoire to architectural tiles-a natural diversification, given the sound-absorbing properties of spongey ceramic. 972-542549336; wix.com/kiltbanana/fargo.
