It makes sense that an entity with "BMW" in the title would be a mobile one. The BMW Guggenheim Lab is commissioning three installations and sending each of them on a two-year odyssey: Conceived as urban think tanks, the designs will explore issues confronting cities today and provide a public place for sharing ideas. Atelier Bow-Wow's Confronting Comfort is making the debut voyage, beginning in New York on August 3 and continuing to Berlin and a yet-to-be-specified destination in Asia. A carbon-fiber skeleton, semitransparent mesh, and a flexible rigging system-what Atelier Bow-Wow refers to as a "traveling toolbox"-combine to create the adaptable 2,500-square-foot pavilion. It's scheduled to host workshops and film screenings on the environment and social responsibility.
