What do Clodagh, Peter Marino, and Lauren Rottet have in common? Besides being Interior Design Hall of Fame members, they've all started subscribing to Hand/Eye. The quarterly magazine is the brainchild of Keith Recker. Now a color consultant for Pantone, he used to be an executive at Gump's San Francisco and Bloomingdale's, where he saw that the home-furnishings business could "change the world by spotlighting and offering opportunities to unknown yet hardworking artisans," he explains. His aim for Hand/Eye is to explore "the nexus between design and development, culture and commerce, art and craft, environment and ethics-connecting cultures and inspiring action." So far, he's covered craftspeople in central Asia, Africa, and Haiti, and he calls an issue devoted to the latter a "love letter to the earthquake-ravaged country." Proceeds from sales go to artisan-related nonprofits.
