"Crossville, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has become the first tile manufacturer in the U.S. to achieve certification of its waste recycling programs through Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), an independent, third-party certifier of recycled claims," states John E. Smith, the company's president and CEO. "Crossville's EcoCycle Recycling ProcessesTM comprise its EcoCycle Fired Waste ProcessTM and its EcoCycle Filtrate Waste ProcessTM. SCS has verified that through these recycling processes, Crossville annually recycles 12 million pounds of previously discarded filtrate, fired tile, and pre-consumer sanitary ware.

"Crossville products previously certified as having recycled content as individual product lines, such as EcoCycle, Color Blox EC and Vista Americana, are now certified through the EcoCycle Recycling Processes," continues Smith. "The content may be a blend of fired and filtrate waste, which may vary among production runs, but the total percentage of recycled content will be stated and will not vary. By certifying its processes, rather than individual products, Crossville will be able to expand its recycled-content products.

"Beginning in June, 2011, all Crossville produced tile will include varying percentages of recycled content of pre-consumer waste from TOTO, the world's largest manufacturer of sustainable, luxury plumbing products, which has been outfitting residential bath spaces and commercial restrooms for over 90 years. Crossville is proud to be working with TOTO, a company whose total commitment to environmental sustainability in both its products and manufacturing processes goes ‘beyond compliance,'" continues Smith.

This waste stream from TOTO has been certified by SCS as part of the EcoCycle Fired Waste Processes. Crossville has developed a proprietary system of processing ceramic and porcelain tile and sanitary ware back into powder used in manufacturing new tile. In addition to the pre-consumer waste from TOTO, Crossville reprocesses its owned fired tile waste, as well as tile it receives through its Tile Take Back program. The consumption of this waste stream has enabled Crossville to reach its long-held goal of being a net consumer of waste in March 2011-consuming more manufacturing waste than it generates. Additionally, this recycling conserves resources; the volume of finished goods Crossville ships now exceeds the amount of raw materials it extracts from the earth for use in manufacturing, Smith said.

To identify products manufactured with recycled content, Crossville has developed the EcoCycle ProcessTM logo, which will designate the minimum percentage of recycled content and the type of recycled content - pre-consumer, post-consumer, etc.

With the new Process Certifications, rather than listing several SCS-certified logos that apply to particular products, Crossville can now use one logo that certifies the entire recycling process. This not only eases the identification of certified product, but also demonstrates Crossville's commitment to a sustainable manufacturing process.
