The Sylvan Collection

Where structure and nature meet—the Sylvan Collection by Mannington Commercial. Designed by Hendrick, Inc, Sylvan uses textural layering and scale variation to bring a modern, urban spirit and vibrant sophistication to healthcare, corporate and education projects.

Inspired by the intersection of architecture and nature, the modular carpet collection's three patterns do more than simply mimic forms found in nature. Design development began with built interpretations of organic forms including Herzong & de Meuron's Bird Nest stadium in Beijing and Zaha Hadid's sculptural tables. These and other design artifacts create places where the industrial and organic intersect and interact, edging into each other's space to bring new and beautiful shape to contemporary landscapes.

"We set out to create a product that fills a gap in the market," says Jennifer Hayward, who along with Alexandra Cardona led Hendricks' design of the collection. "Many of our clients have a strong desire for vibrant spaces that combine a modern, urban spirit with the sophistication that is entering other sectors from hospitality products."

"In our own projects, whether they be healthcare, education or corporate installations, we also find ourselves looking for large scale graphics in unexpected patterns," says Cardona. "This collection speaks into all of those spaces: rather than focusing on a single segment, we wanted to create a single collection that would cross over and work beautifully in each."

The Hendrick design team, working closely with Mannington, accomplished this broad yet deep appeal in part through textural layering, in part through scale variation.

"Scale is very important to each of the patterns," says Hendrick Senior Designer Stephen Wells. "The scales range from large, lush graphics that can be dropped into public spaces to bring dynamic excitement to a very minute scale that is translated almost as pure texture."

At the same time, Hendrick drew on trends in multigenerational spaces to ensure that the collection is applicable to new and renovated spaces in a time when the economy is still uncertain.

"The workplace is increasingly multigenerational, with younger employees who respond to enthusiasm and excitement working alongside professionals whose tastes are more conservative - yet very few products take this into account," says Hendricks principal Chris Heard. "This is good design for good business."

The Sylvan Collection is made with Antron nylon 6,6 and backed with Mannington's Infinity RE backing with 30% recycled content, including 10% post-consumer. All Mannington backings are NSF/ANSI-140 Platinum certified as Environmentally Preferable Products.
