Best of Year: Kitchen & Bath

Meghan Edwards -- Interior Design, 12/1/2010 2:37:00 PM

Best of Year: Kitchen & Bath
Project: Architecture in Formation
Team: Paulo Flores; Ricardo Kendall; Victor Ortega
Location: New York

Banish all thoughts of “man cave” at this bachelor Wall Street trader’s sophisticated loft. Inspired by the faceted capitals of the existing concrete columns, principal Matthew Bremer used 3-D and paramet-ric modeling to design angled planes in white-painted plasterboard, then lit them with a mix of fluorescent, halogen, and incandescent fixtures. Occupying the center of the narrow 3,000-square-foot plan is the kitchen, where bar stools with faceted steel seats, powder-coated a slightly creamier white than the walls, pull up to an island with a counter cantilevering over the mahogany floor. The same mahogany flows into the living area at one end of the kitchen and the den at the other. In the powder room, the planks also sneak up the wall that anchors a toilet by Sieger Design and a similarly boxy Thassos marble sink. More marble combines with limestone, glacier-white Corian, and concrete in the master bathroom. Bremer calls it a “futuristic luxury aircraft.”

Merit Winners:

Best of Year: Kitchen & Bath
Firm: Osmose Design
Location: Portland, Oregon
Standout: A couple’s interest in art and design informs the master bathroom’s hand-painted mural and the master bedroom’s shoe storage.

Best of Year: Kitchen & Bath
Firm: Sand Studios
Location: Miami Beach
Standout: Rosewood veneer looks rich but beachy, paired with orange-veined marble in the powder room and limestone in the master bathroom.

Best of Year: Kitchen & Bath
Firm: Workshop/APD
Location: New York
Standout: A loft's industrial heritage comes through in the master bathroom's painted-steel shelving-warmed up by teak and split-faced limestone.
