Mannington is Expanding the Flooring Industry's Largest Solar Array

With more than two acres of solar panels installed at its New Jersey manufacturing facilities, Mannington is leading the flooring industry in generating renewable energy - and avoiding more than 217 metric tonnes of CO2 greenhouse gases per year. Now Mannington is expanding the solar array again. The expansion will increase energy production to one megawatt and extend the panels over seven rooftops, occupying three and a half acres of space.
Mannington's industry leadership in the area of smart energy conservation and renewable energy use has been recognized by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, who stated that Mannington is "among the vanguard of forward-thinking American companies as a leader in industrial energy efficiency." Earlier this spring, the Department of Energy recognized the company as one of fewer than 50 Save Energy Now Leaders across the country.
"When any corporation seeks to reduce its energy usage and the resulting emissions, the best approach grows out of common sense," said Dave Kitts, Mannington's Vice President - Environment. "It is important first to curb unnecessary use of energy, but progressive companies will change products and processes to improve efficiency in their manufacturing, as well as seek out and implement large-scale renewable energy programs."
For several years, Mannington has instituted rigorous programs to reduce energy used in manufacturing and to replace carbon-intensive practices with those that are more carbon neutral. Since 2008, this has included increasing onsite generation of solar energy in partnership with CarbonFree Technology, Solar Man, LLC and its parent company Integrys Energy Services, Inc.
"Since energy is a critical resource for making flooring products, wise use of electricity and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are an important part of sustainability at Mannington," said Kitts.
The company's sustainability platform is built upon innovative measures to set new standards for smart energy use. These include closing the recycling loop, reducing waste streams and incorporating waste materials from its own processes, from other flooring manufacturers and from other industries into its products.
