Taking Root

"Steelroots: Tobin at the Morton Arboretum" has sprouted in Illinois. On view through Jan­uary, the 14 monumental works by sculptor Steve Tobin represent the fine-art debut of the Morton, a 1,700-acre site devoted to the conservation of trees and plants.

"Steelroots: Tobin at the Morton Arboretum" has sprouted in Illinois. On view through Jan­uary, the 14 monumental works by sculptor Steve Tobin represent the fine-art debut of the Morton, a 1,700-acre site devoted to the conservation of trees and plants.

Steel is a new medium for Tobin, who mostly works in bronze-for example his September 11 memorial, a casting of the roots of the giant sycamore credited with saving St. Paul's Chapel in New York. For "Steelroots," he bent and welded recycled steel pipe into shapes meant to evoke movement and, above all, community.
