Housing Works Raises Funds With Design on a Dime 2010

Fifty interior designers, including Interior Design Hall of Famer Jamie Drake, created room vignettes with new merchandise that was donated and then sold for 50 to 70 percent of retail prices.

Housing Works did what it does best—bringing design and donations together—at its largest annual fundraiser, which just wrapped up its three-day run at New York’s Metropolitan Pavilion.

Dubbed Design on a Dime, the event benefited the Jefferson Avenue Housing Program, a residence in Bedford/Stuyvesant, Brooklyn for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, slated for completion in 2012. The charitable thrift store chain brought together 50 interior designers, including Interior Design Hall of Famer Jamie Drake, Laura Kirar, Steven Scarloff, and Alan Tanksley, to create room vignettes with new merchandise that was donated and then sold for 50 to 70 percent of retail prices.

The event, founded and chaired by interior designer James Huniford, ran from May 6-8 and raised over $700,000 for Housing Works which lays claim to being New York’s largest community-based AIDS service organization. Founded in 1990, it provides lifesaving services including housing, medical care, meals, job training, legal assistance, and HIV prevention education to more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers.
