ASID RealWorld DesignWeekCalling all mentors: the American Society of Interior Designers has officially opened registration for practicing members to sign up for its annual RealWorld DesignWeek.

The one-on-one mentoring sessions between ASID student members and ASID interior design professionals as well as representatives from the suppliers of products and services to the interior design industry, known as Industry Partners, will take place from November 1 to 7.

"RealWorld DesignWeek is a great way for interior designers to give back to the profession by mentoring and molding the next generation of interior designers," says Deborah Forrest, the program's national spokesperson. "I'm asking every interior designer and ASID Industry Partner to take the time to host a student during this year's RealWorld DesignWeek."

The organization calls the initiative the first cohesive, national effort aimed at educating future interior designers through in-person experience. The program's debut last year drew more than 1,500 participants.

Mentor and past ASID president Rita Carson recalls, "I hosted five students, one each day of the week, and was able to show them first-hand the day-to-day operations of an interior design firm. This included attending our weekly staff meeting…a construction site, a vendor presentation and meetings with potential new clients."

Jeannine Lima, an ASID student member from the Art Institute of Atlanta, is equally enthusiastic, "I looked forward to the experience from the day I registered, and it was so much more than I expected."
