June is for the Tony Awards. The Pritzker Prize gets May. For outstanding industrial design, summer is the season both here and abroad.
The Red Dot Design Awards, established in 1955 by Design Zentrum Nordrhin Westfalen, took place this year in Essen, Germany. The event attracted 1,494 entries from designers in 28 countries, and 340 winners were chosen by a jury of international architects and designers—Italy's Massimo Iosa Ghini, the U.K.'s Kenneth Grange, et al. Our own favorite selections include Nokia Design Center's 6200 and 6800 mobile phones, Steelcase Design Group's Cachet chair, and a bird feeder by Menu A/S.
Meanwhile, to determine the gold winners of the Industrial Designers Society of America's annual Industrial Design Excellence Awards, a nonaffiliated jury of 16 spent almost three intense days debating the pros and cons of 1,136 submissions. Palm PDAs, BMW's Mini Cooper, Dutch Boy's pouring containers, and 35 other bright IDEAs came out on top.
We would love your feedback!
