Major New Airport Terminal Opens in Singapore

Brinton's supplied carpet for what is the world's largest airport terminal carpet installation to date.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 1/10/2008 12:00:00 AM

The first flight flew into a major new airport terminal in Singapore yesterday. Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and CPG Corporation, the Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3 is priced at a hefty $1.75 billion.

Terminal 3 will service some 22 million passengers per year from five major airlines. Interiors are designed by architecture, interiors, planning, and graphics firm Woodhead Wilson in colaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority in Singapore. Facilities include 28 aerobridge gates, 70 retail shops, and 30 food and beverage outlets. Natural design elements, such as the five-story Green Wall, a vertical garden with four waterfalls, are integrated throughout.

The terminal also boasts the world’s largest airport terminal carpet installation--over 120,000 square yards of custom woven Axminster carpet from manufacturer Brintons, headquartered in the United Kingdom. The carpet lines arrival and departure halls, meeting points, waiting areas, lounges, retail environments, Singapore Airlines’ First Class, Business Class and A+ lounges, and corridors and guest rooms of the Transit Hotel’s 66-room, on-site facility.
