HAWORTH CENTER, HOLLAND, MICHIGAN
Nicholas Tamarin -- Interior Design, 12/1/2008 12:00:00 AM

The renovation of this furniture company's existing headquarters placed a heavy emphasis on sustainability. Coprincipals-in-charge Eva Maddox and Ralph Johnson's design included the addition of an L-shape atrium that fronts the reconfigured office structure for a total of 300,000 square feet. The new three-story volume provides abundant natural light while its green roof reduces heat gain. Rapidly renewable materials including wheat-board substrate, cork flooring, Forest Stewardship Council–certified wood finishes and products, and Haworth's own Greenguard-certified furnishings were sourced wherever possible. High air quality is delivered via low-energy HVAC equipment in an efficient raised-floor system that allows for individual control in each work area. And it all added up to LEED Gold. perkinswill.com
