Schoolhouse Rock

Staff -- Interior Design, 10/1/2001 12:00:00 AM

This July, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center—the largest multiservice gay organization on the East Coast—re-opened its doors on West 13th Street after a $12-million, nearly three-year-long renovation. Françoise Bollack Architects, recipient of numerous preservation awards, transformed the former 19th-century schoolhouse to implement a clear public circulation system, accessibility, and various upgraded public spaces. The center's main architectural highlight is a three-story, ornamental main stair that winds upward to a skylight visible from all floors.
