Lighting

Staff -- Interior Design, 5/31/2002 12:00:00 AM

Robert Abbey: Designer Rico Espinet boasts a superglam résumé, with stints creating stage lighting for Madonna and Sonic Youth and acting as lighting consultant for Bergdorf Goodman. Espinet is now developing a signature line of lighting for Robert Abbey. Part of the collection, the Marina chandelier has frosted opaline glass shades and brushed-chrome accents. We think it versatile enough to make a stellar impression in either a residential or contract environment. Rico, 372 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217; 718-797-2077. circle 390

Galbraith & Paul: Cube pendants feature hand-block printed lamp shades by Liz Galbraith. They are available in small, medium, and large and in a variety of lively patterns. Shown here are Beads, Circles, and Marigo. 116 Shurs Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19127; 215-508-0800. circle 391

Bone Simple Design: Designer Chad Jacobs's vibrant Silk Pleated Trio pendant features handmade dupioni-silk shades and satin nickel-plated steel stems and canopy. Each fixture is made to order, and sizes, fabrics, and colors are completely customizable. 407 West 13th Street, 2B, New York, NY 10014; 212-627-0876. circle 392

Moon Shine Lamp and Shade: Even those too young to wax nostalgic about the 1950s will appreciate the retro-kitsch of these reproduction fiberglass lamp shades. Made with the same materials, methods, and machinery as the originals, each shade includes nylon or leather lacing. 3811A Eastside Avenue, Dallas, TX 75226; 214-827-2211. circle 393

Jean-Christophe Le Greves: In the construction entitled Cinema, light is used as an element in a composition rather than as an end in itself. This is not your typical table lamp. What it is: an ingeniously simple light box made of chestnut and chromed steel with Edison 1910 model bulbs. Bow Wow Gallery, 70 Princedale Road, London W11 4NL, England; 44-207-792-8532. circle 394

Leucos: The elegant Kon pendant light, designed by architect Toso Massari, almost seems suspended in midair. The transparent crystal of the lamp's truncated cone is pressed glass, which incorporates a barely perceptible support attached to the lamp's chrome-plated inner structure. 11 Mayfield Avenue, P.O. Box 7829, Edison, NJ 08818; 732-225-0010. circle 395

Light: Designer Matilde Alessandra's Madam light has an otherworldly presence that we find oddly appealing. Produced in a limited number in Belgium, the light is made of coated acrylic and measures 30 inches by 30 inches by 1 inch. Dakota Jackson, Pacific Design Center, Suite 6170, Los Angeles, CA 90069; 310-659-7424. circle 396

LBL Lighting: The distinctive Maraca-S-1 fixture has real silver flakes mixed into its shade of handblown Murano glass. Choose from amber, blue, mocha, opal, or red glass. The canopy can be finished in black or in polished or satin chrome. 320 West 202nd Street, Chicago Heights, IL 60411; 800-323-3226. circle 397

Illuminating Experiences: The multipurpose Aco fixture has a Murano glass diffuser that can be mounted in a concave or convex position on either the wall or the ceiling. Movable joints can be adjusted to create the desired lighting effect, adding even more versatility. Aco is available in both halogen and fluorescent versions. 233 Cleveland Avenue, Highland Park, NJ 08904; 732-745-5858. circle 398

Artemide: The Logico suspension light has a lovely, protean grace and can be suspended singly or in a group of three with a nested or linear configuration. The diffuser is handblown glass with a satin-crystal finish; the painted frame is cast aluminum; and the support cables are stainless steel. 1980 New Highway, Farmingdale, NY 11735; 631-694-9292. circle 399

Flos: The unique luminescence of Antonio Citterio's XXL halogen floor light is a result of two layers of glass. The internal diffuser of blown opal glass is surrounded by an external diffuser of transparent glass. The light measures 79 inches high and features a brass column with a finish of satin nickel or galvanized bronze. 200 McKay Road, Huntington Station, NY 11746; 631-549-2745. circle 400

D'ac Lighting: The handblown contours of the Bang sconce suggest a glowing champagne glass. Made of sandblasted and polished Italian glass with chrome details. 420 Railroad Way, P.O. Box 262, Mamaroneck, NY 10543; 914-698-5959. circle 401

Palmer Hargrave: Designer Kerry Joyce strikes the right note with the proportions of the Lamond, a lamp handcrafted in brass with a finish of polished nickel. 308 West Mill, Plainville, KS 67663; 785-434-2011. circle 402

W.A.C. Lighting: The energy-efficient Metal Halide Track fixture, an ideal solution for perimeter and dramatic accent lighting in high-ceilinged spaces, provides true white light and is offered in a broad range of lamp sizes and wattages. 615 South Street, Garden City, NY 11530; 800-526-2588. circle 403

Butter: The Dumpling table lamp features a shade made from fiberglass paper with zigzag stitching up the center. 10 Jay Street, 801A, Brooklyn, NY 11201; 718-923-0084. circle 404

Hwang Bishop: Designer Felicia Hwang Bishop's Zhumu table lamp (center) has a subtly Asian inflection. The piece is made of naturally finished mahogany accented by a ridged gold-leafed section around the waist. 30 Cutler Street, Warren, RI 02885; 401-245-9557. circle 405

Flos: For his Super Archimoon floor lamp, Philippe Starck reimagined the classic bend-and-flex architect's light. The lamp's base is painted steel and technopolymer, and the body is painted aluminum with steel springs. True to form, the designer adds an unexpected (pleasantly domestic) touch with a plissé fabric shade over an opal glass diffuser. 200 McKay Road, Huntington Station, NY 11746; 631-549-2745. circle 406

Space Lighting: This company is now the exclusive U.S. distributor for the celebrated Italian lighting collection Viabizzuno. Among the line's most intriguing products is Bamboo, shown with one rotating fiberglass rod. 848 Brickell Key Drive, Miami, FL 33131; 305-373-4422. circle 407

Zumtobel Staff Lighting: The down-lights from the MH-T6 series use a new ceramic metal halide T6 lamp that is compact and energy-efficient with exceptional color stability—the perfect fixture for atria and other spaces blessed with high ceilings. 3300 Route 9W, Highland, NY 12528; 845-691-6262. circle 408

The Alpha Workshops: Ever fans of the outré, we fell hard for the Eden Roc standing lamp, which is custom-cast in plaster with a silver-leaf finish. The lamp is 51 inches high and available in a wide range of leaf and paint finishes. 245 West 29th Street, Suite 12A, New York, NY 10001; 212-594-7320. circle 409

Targetti: Reminiscent of stepped Mayan temples, Maya down-lights provide crisp, focused direct illumination. Made of glass, they are available with a clear-frosted or blue-translucent finish. 1513 East Saint Gertrude Place, Santa Ana, CA 92705; 714-957-6101. circle 410

Hinson Lighting: We think the free-form curves of the Alvar pendant would look particularly appealing mounted in a cluster. Featuring a white opalescent acrylic shade suspended from stainless-steel wires sheathed in slim 12-inch matte nickel rods, these fixtures are now available in two sizes. 27-35 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101; 718-482-1100. circle 411

Boyd Lighting: The genteel Milano chandelier would be at home in both residential and hospitality settings. It is available with a 24-inch or 32-inch ring diameter (each with four stems) and in brass or nickel finishes. 944 Folsom Street, San Francisco, CA 94107; 415-778-4300. circle 412

Kozo Lighting: The charming L3/08 fixture is from the Shape of Light collection. Artisans create the delicate-looking but surprisingly resilient shades by laminating fine paper from Japan or Nepal with silk gossamer. The hardware is solid brass with an oil-rubbed finish. 12601 East Marginal Way South, Seattle, WA 98168; 206-835-6304. circle 413

George Kovacs: Designed by Alecia Wesner, the Park desk lamp radiates sophistication. The shades are made from crisp, pleated linen, and the body is now available in a satin-nickel finish. 67-25 Otto Road, Glendale, NY 11385; 718-628-5201. circle 414

Pallucco: The Asa floor lamp of painted steel is two-faced in the best sense. The diffuser turns to adjust the direction of the light from the ceiling to the floor. Available in 54-inch and 66-inch heights and in silver or gray finishes. Property, 14 Wooster Street, New York, NY 10013; 917-237-0123. circle 415

Luz Lampcraft: Designer Lanie Kagan's Double Square pendant has impressive scale and presence. At 36 by 36 by 22 inches, the fixture features rounded corners and an acrylic diffuser covered in nubby silk. 17 Little West 12th Street, Suite 6, New York, NY 10014; 212-255-1909. By appointment only. circle 416

Remington Lamp: The Geometric table lamp could almost pass for an African sculpture. It is teak-finished, has a three-way socket, and stands 24 inches high. 5000 Paschall Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19143; 215-729-2600. circle 417

Odegard: Originally created for the 2001 French Designer Showhouse in New York, the Vaisseau sconce is now in production. The delicate design is the result of a collaboration between Paul Mathieu and Stephanie Odegard. Made of marble in India, the pieces measure 12 inches square. 200 Lexington Avenue, Suite 1206, New York, NY 10016; 212-545-0069. circle 418

Christopher Poehlmann Studio: The resourceful and ecologically minded designer of the Luxury Box lamp salvages discarded clear acrylic from poster shops and recycles it into attractive shades. Each lamp is made and sized to order and features a brushed-aluminum base. 727 102nd Avenue North, Naples, FL 34108; 866-597-4800. circle 419
