A new arts center designed by architecture firm Steven Holl Architects is underway in Herning, Denmark. Conceived to draw three cultural institutions under one roof, the 60,300-square-foot Herning Center of the Arts will serve as the new home for the Herning Art Museum, the MidWest ensemble, and the Socle du Monde.
Steven Holl Architects´ concept for the one-story center--which will include permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, a restaurant, a media library, and administrative offices--plays on the surrounding landscape. Grass mounds and pools strategically located to capture the sun's rays are carved out of a 129,000 square-foot field to hide parking and service areas.
Inside, gallery spaces are orthogonal and illuminated by natural light and environmentally-friendly features include a geothermal HVAC system and grey water recycling.
The building structure is influenced by a neighboring building--an old shirt factory, housing part of the current collection, designed in the form a shirt collar. "A fabric theme is carried throughout the project from the shape of the building which resembles a collection of shirtsleeves viewed from above, through the wall finishes," explains principal Steven Holl. Design elements also draw cues from Povera artists including Pierro Manzoni.
The firm landed the project after winning an international competition in 2005.
