Architex

"A lack of formal training can open one up to new or uncommon techniques," says Angela Adams. The designer began her career as a decorative painter before switching her focus to the boldly colored, hand-tufted rugs in large graphic and floral patterns for which she's well-known. Now, Adams is moving onto contract textiles with the launch of her debut collection for Architex at NeoCon this June. Developed in less than a year, the line's 31 patterns (27 textiles and 4 vinyls) come in 173 combined colorways, all of which embody Adams's signature geometry and psychedelia in extra-durable fabrics. Cotton-wool Manfred, for example, comes in four distinctive hues and boasts 100,000 double rubs. The Crypton-finished polyester-rayon-blend fibers composing the loopy Kenga come in six colors including this spirited tangerine. Wavy Hazel is a cotton-wool blend that wears up to 60,000 double rubs, while cotton-polyester-blend Majesty withstands 80,000. The pattern of Crypton-finished cotton-polyester Easton was inspired by TV sets. The amoeba-like forms of the chenille Finn are rendered in six earthy colorways. 3333 Commercial Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062; 800-621-0827; architex-ljh.com. circle 318

Maharam

Maira Kalman's cheeky illustrations have enlivened her children's books, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. Kate Spade even had her develop a pattern for a handbag collection. Kalman now makes her mark on contract textiles with The Story of My Life, which she designed for Maharam. The rayon-polyester fabrics are embellished with some 200 different doodles, ranging from a nesting bird to a ladder and a rhinoceros, all inspired by everyday-life observations. "Walking everywhere, seeing anything, weaving a story…that's my full-time occupation and delight," she says. The fabrics' fine denier warp preserves the simple quality of Kalman's original caricatures, and the five background colorways—Abyss, Coffee, Hay, Snow, and Venetian—allow the renderings to really sing. 501 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010; 800-645-3943; maharam.com. circle 339
