Teknion Showroom Earns LEED Gold

The design team sourced FSC-certified wood and all Teknion products are Greenguard-certified.

Recycled plastic bottles take new life in furniture manufacturer Teknion's San Francisco showroom. Designed by Vanderbyl Design, the 11,000-square-foot space recently picked up LEED for Commercial Interiors 2.0 Gold, the second highest certification for sustainable interiors from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Centrally located at 88 Kearney Street in downtown San Francisco, the showroom was unveiled in September 2007. The 15th floor space boasts an abundance of natural light, a feature the design team decided to fully employ. Water-jet cut in an organic pattern, the white plastic bottles create translucent panels that form a dramatic central wall treatment. Light flows in--and, once the wall has completed its lifecycle, more than 50 percent of the material can be recycled back to the panel manufacturer.

Wood is Forest Stewardship Council-certified and all products are stamped with the Greenguard label, insuring they meet stringent indoor air quality standards. In addition to the bottles, several other recycled and recyclable materials can be found throughout.

"We continually focus on ensuring that our products, manufacturing processes and facilities are safe and healthy for all, and that our actions positively impact the environment," says David Feldberg, president and CEO.

Headquartered in Toronto, Teknion has offices and facilities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Pacific Rim.
