Mid-Atlantic Mixture

-- Interior Design, 2/1/2001 12:00:00 AM

SITUATED BETWEEN INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS in downtown Alexandria, Virginia, Design Solutions has exclusive rights in the Mid-Atlantic region for some of the most innovative flooring products on the market, including Centiva by International Floors of America, Wicanders cork, Mondo rubber flooring, and designer concrete. The company is also working to obtain exclusive representation with a porcelain tile line, an access flooring line, glass flooring, and a stone line. Shown here are projects that integrate Design Solutions products.

The first example, the M. Constantino Salon created by Inner-Salon Designs, uses Centiva, which offers solid vinyl tiles and planks in a variety of surfaces, colors, sizes, and styles. Combining design with durability and low maintenance, the material can withstand the heaviest traffic areas.

Designer concrete by Design Solutions is a custom alternative to conventional flooring. Designers can choose stains, saw cuts, decorative cuts, or stamping to emulate brick, pavers, or wood. Design Solutions can be troweled vertically or horizontally, indoors and out; and it will bond to old concrete, asphalt, wood, metal, brick, tile, and stone at a thickness of 1 1/48 to 1 1/44 in. Shown here is the office for The Widmeyer Group designed by Michele LeTourneur and Arnold Craig Levin of Liminality.

Wicanders' quiet, highly durable cork floor is produced from the stripped bark of the cork oak tree native to Mediterranean countries. The first cork bark is taken when the trees are 25 years old. The tree, unharmed, re-grows its cork surface, which can be re-harvested every nine years.

Having done most of its business in Europe and Canada, Mondo, best-known for its sports flooring, is now moving into the U.S. market by offering resilient commercial flooring. Mondo is the only manufacturer of six-ft.-wide rubberized sheet goods that can be heat-welded. Mondo is available in a variety of colors.

With a staff of six specification consultants, the company boasts a client list of more than 200 firms in the Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Richmond corridor. Design Solutions, 450-B South Pickett Street, Alexandria, VA 22304. www.designsolutions1.com.
