These miniature chairs may be small on size, but they’re big on design. More than 350 pieces owned by Material ConneXion founder George Beylerian are being presented at New York's Museum of Arts & Design in "Have a Seat! The Beylerian Collection of Small Chairs."
"This museum's interest in materials and processes is directly reflected in this compelling collection," says Holly Hotchner, director of MAD.
Indeed the pieces, which were collected from all over the world, come in various sizes—from 3 inches high to a foot high—and shapes. Extraordinary creative expression is found in this diminutive form, in materials that range from silk, ceramic, and tin to scrub brushes, theater ticket stubs, and twigs. Some of these were used by manufacturers as promotional pieces, some were created by celebrated artists and designers such as Ron Arad and Cheryl Riley, and some were simply found in flea markets.
The exhibition, organized around eight themes, is an expansion of the well-received traveling exhibition, "Chairmania," and will be on view from June 28 to October 28. Until then, get a preview in our online slide show. For more information, visit madmuseum.org.
