Putting Acconci on The Map

edited by Sheila Kim -- Interior Design, 2/1/2003 12:00:00 AM

Not noted in any atlas, a new island has materialized in Austria's Mur River as it flows past the city of Graz. The floating steel-and-glass permanent structure was conceived by American artist-architect Vito Acconci and Austrian curator Robert Punkenhofer as part of a yearlong contemporary-arts festival. Two narrow, curving bridges offer access to the 320-ton Mur Island, which houses an amphitheater, a playground, a café, and viewing areas for up to 350 visitors.
