Handing its highest honor to a project from the Aloha State, the Northern California Chapter of the IIDA awarded Best of Show to the Honolulu-based firm of Phillpotts & Associates for its renovation of the famed pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel at its annual awards night.
The IIDA chapter, which, yes, includes Hawaii, held its annual Honor Awards and Pioneers in Design Celebration on March 30 at Oakland's art deco-era Fox Theater. A jury including president and CEO of Donghia and Bergamo Fabrics, Crans Baldwin, waded through over 74 projects submitted from designers from Northern California, Northern Nevada, and the aforementioned state of islands, to hand out awards in six categories: Live, Work, Play, Shop, Serve, and Give.

San Francisco firms were the night's big winners with 13 firms from the city taking home awards, including six for Gensler San Francisco in a variety of categories, and two for Aidlin Darling Design.
"Community and connection are what we do best," said Collin Burry, the IIDA Northern California Chapter president for 2009-2010 and a principal at Gensler. "This year's awards are all reflective of that theme and given the changing world, that great sense of community will be ever more important."

Perhaps the most moving honor of the night went to the founders of Architecture for Humanity, Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr, who were named the chapter's 2010 Pioneers in Design for their efforts in helping impoverished and war torn areas through their volunteer army of 40,000 architects and designers. In typical AFH fashion, Sinclair exhorted those in attendance "to give a damn about design; become involved."
