Chrysler Salutes

The 2001 Chrysler Design Awards gala took place on October 17th at the landmark Four Seasons restaurant in New York. The awards recognized design innovation and excellence in disciplines ranging from graphic and product design to landscape design and architecture.

1. Three Cheers: One of six winners of the 2001 award, architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, fraternizes with past winners Todd Williams and Bob Greenberg.

2. In the Spotlight: NBC TV correspondent and ceremony emcee John Hockenberry presents the award to Mary-Ann Ray and Robert Mangurian, principals of the architectural firm Studio Works.

3. Smile!: Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister, event cochair Chee Pearlman, DaimlerChrysler vice president Freeman Thomas, and architect David Rockwell.

Light Bright

On October 10th, the New York Design Center was aglow with lamps that various leaders in the creative community designed for Bright Ideas, a benefit for Worldstudio Foundation. Sol LeWitt, Jonathan Adler, and Todd Oldham were among the many whose creations were auctioned that evening.

4. Vampire, Away!: Stephanie Stokes brandishes her "garlic" lamp.

5. Party of Three: Grid magazine editor in chief Peter Slatin flanked by NYDC marketing and communications director Samantha Nestor and president James Druckman.

6. Toasting the Evening: Beth Dickstein, of Beth Dickstein Enterprises and Emmanuel Plat, buying director of The Terence Conran Shop, relax after guest-curating the auction.

7. Who Let the Dogs Out?: Jan Wilker and Hjalti Karlsson of graphic design firm Karlssonwilker having a doggone good time.

8. We Are the World: Worldstudio Foundation vice president Mark Randall and president David Sterling.

9. Rock, Paper, Scissors: Three very different, lighthearted designs by (left to right) potter Jonathan Adler, fashion designer Gene Meyer, and textile/carpet designer Karim Rashid.

10. Sending You My Love: Interior designer Mario Buatta with his "postcards on the edge" design.

11. Silhouettes: Graphic designer Alexander Isley demonstrates what shadow play's all about.
