China's first cultural revolution left a trail of burning books and murdered intellectuals. Thankfully, the second is proving much kinder.
Herzog & de Meuron's bird's nest of a stadium, now rising for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, is already being touted as an architectural wonder. Magazines are documenting 1930's Shanghai revivalism in furniture design. And in the shadows of the Great Wall, which Karl Lagerfeld commandeered last fall for his Fendi catwalkers, culture vultures are pairing Bordeaux reds with Australian tenderloin at the Commune by the Great Wall Kempinski, a luxury hotel by 12 independent Asian architects, including Kanika R'kul of Bangkok and Rocco Yim of Hong Kong.
Halfway around the world, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum plans to herald this cultural resurgence. "China Design Now," running March 15 to July 13, will gauge the impact of the country"s rapid economic growth on architecture, furniture and fashion design, photography, filmmaking, and more.
