Extra Oxo

edited by Sheila Kim -- Interior Design, 9/1/2003 12:00:00 AM

"We are all tiring of the overly minimalistic," proclaims designer Wayne Hemingway, a judge for this year's Oxo Peugeot Design Awards in London, and the 2003 winners do indeed display a fanciful touch. Ryan McElhinney's plump yet lightweight Knot sofa of foam and Lycra captured the award for special development, while Martino Gamper's angular, Gerrit Rietveld–inspired Sit Together bench of iroko wood snagged the top spot in the furniture category. Lehti, Maria Jauhiainen's intricately photo-etched silver fruit bowl, won for applied metal, Kylie Turner's Modpod sculptural stacking acrylic fixtures won for lighting, and Helen Murray's Sculptural fabric of polyester wadding won for textiles. The awards ceremony took place at the Oxo Tower Wharf, where the winning entries are on display. Through October 5; 44-20-7401-3610; oxotower.co.uk.
