The museum was developed by two major cultural organizations.

In June, a new contemporary art museum will open in a formal industrial area of Athens, Greece. Developed by the Dublin-based European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, the Contemporary Space Athens will serve as an international showcase for contemporary architecture, design, and art.

Existing buildings will be renovated to offer spacious galleries, museum offices, performance spaces, and an outdoor sculpture area, open to the public. Facilities will also serve European Centre's public outreach programs.

"[Contemporary Space Athens] represents a considerable cultural investment by our institution inside the European Union to bring to our European audience the best new public education programs on the themes of modern art and modern design and as a way to serve our institution’s ever-growing audience of European architects, designers, artists, developers, professionals in real-estate and business, corporate executives, manufacturers and general public," says Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, museum president, the Chicago Athenaeum.

Located at 48-46 Vassiliou Megalou in the Rouf district, Contemporary Space Athens will launch with an exhibition of new international design.
