Seeking a more sustainable destination than landfills for the estimated 700,000 carpet samples that are sent to architecture and design firms every year, the annual Ample Sample contest is once again challenging entrants to create new products by using repurposed carpet samples.

Entries for the contest are due on or before May 8. Designers can visit the Ample Sample website for criteria and instructions, as well as a look at past winners and finalists.

This year’s winning ideas will be showcased at NeoCon 2009 in Chicago from June 15 to 17, and will be featured on the Ample Designs site, accompanied by blueprints and details on the design’s construction. The site will also offer an interactive feature, allowing visitors to rate and comment upon the 2009 entrants.

The contest is sponsored by Tricycle, a firm that helps manufacturers and designers reduce sample waste through such technologies as Tryk, a patent-pending system that mimics the tufting and production process to produce realistic carpet images.
