Construction has kicked-off for a new theater and performing arts center in Leicester, England, designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. The 140,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed mid-2007.
The design consists of two theaters—one seating 750, and the other 350—and is envisioned to be visible from the street and exposed to full public view and use. This ‘turned inside-out’ philosophy allows more usable space, and can be incorporated into a broader range of performances.
The stage, located between the two theaters, will be available for both, and can be used for simultaneous performances. An upper foyer-level walkway will allow for additional theatrical or viewing options.
"The groundbreaking stage of any project is always exciting, but in this case it is especially gratifying to confirm that work will begin. I am delighted that the city of Leicester is moving ever nearer towards having what I hope will be a much loved and valued cultural facility, fully befitting the city’s unique character and charms," says Vinoly, the firm’s principal, who designs every assignment.
Rafael Viñoly Architects has headquarters in New York and London, as well as offices across the U.S. and Europe.
We would love your feedback!
