Designers throughout the metro New York area will soon have a place to call their own in Manhattan, thanks to DuPont and its one-of-a-kind Corian Design Studio.
Opening officially on June 1 in the city's Flatiron district, the 5,000-square-foot space will serve as an interactive workshop for architects and designers, who can make appointments with master surface solutions providers Evans & Paul for consultations on specific uses of the ubiquitous solid surfacing material.
"The Design Studio is a showplace for new offerings, fabrication skills and real-life applications," says Christopher Whitelaw, director of research and development for Evans & Paul. The showroom will also provide project support for designers using Zodiaq, DuPont's quartz solid surfacing product. A rotating series of exhibits from international designers is also in the works.
Custom designed by New York-based architects Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato of Morris Sato Studio, the space's standout is its "starry sky," constructed of 74 illuminated Corian segments that hover over application vignettes of the brand in real-life settings—operating rooms, feature walls, hospitality, education, residential, lighting and furniture.
"Our collective vision was to create a place of interaction and experiment, where industry experts can collaborate and create inspirational environments,” says Elizabeth Lawson, North America commercial marketing manager for DuPont Surfaces. “The space will serve as the premier resource to demonstrate how DuPont Surfaces can be used as innovative, flexible and inspirational design materials."
