Fountain of Youth

edited by Craig Kellogg -- Interior Design, 2/1/2007 12:00:00 AM

In Oakland, California, the spectacular recirculating Cleveland Cascade from 1923 had fallen into disrepair by about 1950—when it was turned off, its concrete bowls filled with soil and rosemary bushes. Excavating the 100-foot-high waterfall was the easy part. But funds to get the falls flowing again have been trickling in. A $300,000 city grant and a $50,000 donation from American Express Partners in Preservation have been secured. Donations are still needed to restore the pumps and plants—and fire up the original rainbow lighting.
