Square Meal

Right before Sicis opened its New York showroom, the tile manufacturer's first freestanding location in the U.S., Interior Design cohosted a lunch there—but, with architect Massimiliano Raggi's 13,000-square-foot tri-level space, clearly the real feast was for the eyes.

White House Welcome

Distinguished designers, patrons, and advocates convened in the East Room for a breakfast heralding the National Design Awards. Hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, the event rolled out the red carpet for winners and finalists from both 2006 and 2005.

  1. Ceramist Eva Zeisel,the 2005 lifetime-achievement honoree, and First Lady Laura Bush.

  2. Museum of Modern Art architecture and design curator Paola Antonelli,the 2006 "design mind" award winner, and Gluckman Mayner Architects principal Richard Gluckman,the 2005 interior design winner.

  3. Architect Paolo Soleri, the lifetime-achievement honoree for 2006.

  4. Gabellini Sheppard Associates partner Michael Gabellini, winner of the 2006 award for interior design.

  5. Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen,a judge for the 2006 awards, and actor Robert Downey, Jr.

  6. Dacra president Craig Robins,the design patron for 2006.

  7. Toledo Studio partner Isabel Toledo, 's winner for fashion, and this year's winner, Maria Cornejo.

  8. Maharam's Michael Maharam, vice chairman of the October awards gala.

  9. Morphosis principal Thom Mayne,the 2006 winner for architecture.
