George Yu died from a rare form of lung cancer on July 7 in Los Angeles. An ice-hockey player and a nonsmoker, he was 43.

George Yu Architects, founded in 1992, completed more than 65 projects, from L.A. to Shang hai. Yu had a similarly global personal history. Born in Hong Kong, he grew up in British Columbia. After earning his graduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, he worked with Morphosis, spending two years in Japan. He won the Prix de Rome in 2000, participated in the architecture biennial in Venice in 2004, and taught at L.A.'s SCI-Arc and the University of British Columbia.

Yu is survived by his wife of 18 years, Carole, and two daughters, Elena, 13, and Dara, 6.
