Who's Plugged In?

edited by Craig Kellogg -- Interior Design, 8/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

If Dan Flavin is the patron saint of sculptures assembled from glowing tubes and bulbs, he has clearly given his blessing to "Artificial Light" at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The exhibition puts forward contemporary artists who owe a debt to Flavin in terms of materials if not form.

There's something beyond minimalism in the impressionistic twilight Spencer Finch synthesizes from filtered fluorescents. Ivan Navarro sculpts with both incandescents and fluorescents, then adds an air of menace with his titles: White Electric Chair is a sculpture you're definitely not supposed to sit on, no matter how closely it resembles a Gerrit Rietveld. September 15–October 29; 804-828-1522; vcu.edu/artweb/gallery.
