In Memoriam: Monica Geran

Prior to her retirement in 2005, Monica held her role as the magazine's senior editor for close to 40 years.

Monica Geran Interior Design magazineMonica Geran, former senior editor of Interior Design magazine, died of heart failure on Christmas day, 2009, in New York. Born in the United Kingdom in the 1920’s, she eventually made her way to the United States to attend the prestigious Seven Sisters school Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

Following a career in public relations, she joined the staff of Interior Design as early as 1968, proving herself an astute grammarian, as well as a lyrical wordsmith with cheeky British tone who’d set a standard for the magazine’s editorial voice and reporting style for years to come. On a personal level, those who worked with and knew her recall not only her intellect, but also her eccentricities and subtle sense of humor.

After almost 40 years with the magazine, she retired in 2005 and stayed on as a contributor. Monica will be missed greatly by us, as well as by anyone in the industry who encountered her.

A public memorial service will be held for her at 10AM on Friday, January 8, at the Frank Campbell Funeral Chapel (1076 Madison Avenue at East 81st Street) in New York. Donations can be made in her name to any charity.
