An ecologically instructive visitors' center, a public waterfront park in Manhattan, and a historic Beaux-Arts bank turned sustainable library in Providence, Rhode Island are among the winners of a new biennial awards program launched by the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA NY) and the Boston Society of Architects. The Building Type Design Awards honor architectural excellence and innovation in specialized design fields.
Both seasoned and emerging firms from New York City and Massachusetts submitted projects located around the world, regardless of budget or size, into three sectors: Educational Facilities, Sustainable Projects, and Urban Design.
A total of 104 entries were received, and winners were designated with either honor or merit citations. Members of the jury included architects Jane H. Weinzapfel, Stephen J. Kieran, and M. David Lee.
"The Building Type Awards of the AIA New York Chapter recognize superlative achievements by specialists whose work is unheralded by general-purpose design juries that are sometimes too influenced by form and photos," says James McCullar, 2008 AIA New York Chapter president. "Through their impact on people’s lives, all of the special projects receiving awards incorporate innovation and accommodation to truly represent 'designs for living.'"
Awards sectors will change annually -- the next competition will focus on Health and Housing Facilities.
On Wednesday, April 30, an awards luncheon will honor winners of the Building Type Awards and the AIA NY Design Awards. Projects from both competitions will be on view at the Center for Architecture, May 1-June 28.
