Steelcase Recognized for Green Products

Twelve seating lines get the green thumbs up.

Staff -- Interior Design, 3/10/2004 12:00:00 AM

The Greenguard website warns that all products emit chemicals such as formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that impact the quality of indoor air. But twelve of Steelcase Inc.'s seating product lines were recently awarded the Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certification by the Greenguard Environmental Institute.

The independent, non-profit organization's goal is to establish acceptable standards for indoor products and testing protocols and to improve public health by helping manufacturers build safer products. It is the only testing program worldwide for low-emitting products, that is, those that have minimal impact on the indoor environment.

Among the Steelcase seating lines that received certification are Cachet, Criterion, Drive, Gentry, Leap, Max Stacker, Max Stacker II, Parade, Protégé, Rally, Sensor and Turnstone Springboard. These products will be monitored by Greenguard on a quarterly basis to ensure that they retain the low-emitting status.

“The Greenguard certification is a prestigious industry program recognizing the importance of indoor air quality, and of developing products that have a minimal impact on our work environments. In addition to our current seating certifications, we are also seeking Greenguard certification for our major systems and casegoods furniture,” said David Rinard, director of corporate environmental performance at Steelcase, in a statement.

The Greenguard Certification Program aims to help builders, architects, interior designers, specifying professionals and consumers identify low-emitting products. Access to the Greenguard Product Guide is free online at www.greenguard.org.
