Update

Catch these events in November and December

Edted by Jen DeRose -- Interior Design, 10/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

1. Organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum in California, "Multicultural Modernism: The Work of Steven Ehrlich Architects" showcases 36 projects through models, drawings, and floor plans. The retrospective begins with the Los Angeles firm's founding in 1979 and culminates with buildings such as this biotech research laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The $50 million design, completed in 2003, features a ventilated curtain wall made of terra-cotta. November 11– April 15; 760-325-7186; psmuseum.org.

2. "Alan Fletcher: 50 Years of Graphic Work (and Play)" honors the late creative director of Phaidon Press and cofounder of Pentagram—known for designing the Victoria and Albert Museum logo. Until his September death, Fletcher had been helping prepare this retrospective at London's Design Museum, to which he'd already donated his archive of collages and illustrations. The show, scheduled to open as planned, includes this promotional blotter for a 1958 issue of Fortune. November 11– February 18; 44-8708-339955; designmuseum.org.

3. The animated Edna Mode played fashion designer to the superheroes in The Incredibles, but mere mortals can experience her work in "Design Life Now: National Design Triennial" at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, in New York. As part of a selection of Pixar clips, Edna appears along with Chado Ralph Rucci's real-life Trellis dress, Herman Miller's New Office Landscape furniture, and Lazor Office's FlatPak prefab housing—all among the curators' 87 favorite U.S. designs from the last three years. December 8–July 29; 212-849-8400; cooperhewitt.org.

4. Representing an ongoing dialogue with Francisco de Goya's etching series Desastres de la Guerra, the notorious 1993 sculpture Disasters of War is among the star attractions in "Jake and Dinos Chapman: Bad Art for Bad People" at the U.K.'s Tate Liverpool. The British brothers' first major museum survey in their native country, the show was originally slated to run three years ago; it was postponed for undisclosed reasons. December 15–March 4; 44-151-702-7400; tate.org.uk.

5. Just blocks from the fray of Art Basel Miami Beach, the Wolfsonian–Florida International University is simultaneously taking advantage of its prime location and recognizing Miami's bilingual community with a site-specific installation, (Lo & Behold)(Mira & Ve). Conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner will paint those two translated phrases on the museum's 1927 facade, then repeat them on the lobby's walls and terra-cotta fountain. December 8–February 28; 305-531-1001; wolfsonian.org.
