Before the first crack of the bat, the new Populous-designed Yankee Stadium already had its first triple play – Legends Suite Club, Legends Suite Dugout Lounges and NYY Steak restaurant – in a 37,000-square-foot space with interiors by II By IV Design Associates.

The Toronto-based firm drew inspiration from the fabled franchise's trademark navy blue, and its interlocking "NY" logo, one of the most recognizable insignia in sports, for diverse graphic treatments throughout.

"With a history of legendary players and management, the New York Yankees are one of the most successful organizations in all of professional sports," says II By IV co-owner Dan Menchions. "Our design goal was to reflect that proud heritage in a contemporary, sophisticated and luxurious context of distinctive design element."

For Legends Suite Club, a 700-seat, bi-level dining club located behind home plate, the firm used Bronx Bomber blue for the entry's custom-laminated glass panels, as well as the bar's acid-etched mirror wall. As you'd expect, the Yankee logo is omnipresent: printed on glass, jet-cut into lacquered screens, embossed or engraved on panels of burled walnut veneer and high gloss lacquer.

Nostalgia rules the private Legends Suite Dugout Lounges, running along the first- and third-base lines, where II By IV outfitted the blue entry corridor with a massive backlit installation of the famous 1937 photo of Lou Gehrig eyeing five bats. Inside the lounges, photos of legends such as Red Ruffing, Joe Gordon, Bill Dickey, Charlie Keller and Joe DiMaggio back the drink rails.

Overlooking the Stadium's Great Hall is NYY Steak, where clubby dining chairs boast Yankee blue leather, and a lobby knife display reminds regulars that they’ll be carving their porterhouses with custom-made, engraved Laguiole cutlery whenever they visit.

But beyond these dining and drinking establishments, II by IV also designed the suite-level Banquet & Conference Center, a flexible space that can be divided into two individual areas. Principal design elements include Yankee-blue veneered doors, a retractable canvas-patterned glass wall, terrazzo flooring set with the team's medallion, and a custom-tufted, logo-emblazoned carpet.

"It's been an enormous privilege and responsibility to contribute to the evolution of an American icon," adds Menchions. "And, it's been a delight to experience the Yankee organization's amazing leadership in the creation of this remarkable facility."
