USGBC Backs New Credentialing Organization

GBCI will undergo the ANSI accreditation process.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 11/28/2007 12:00:00 AM

A new credentialing organization for green building professionals has entered the scene backed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) will assume responsibility of the USGBC's LEED Professional Accreditation program as well as develop and administer credentialing programs in an effort to improve green building practice.

Acting as independent administrator, GBCI will take over the LEED Professional Accreditation--including exam development, registration, and delivery-- in January 2008. The newly incorporated entity will also undergo the ANSI accreditation process for personnel certification agencies complying with ISO Standard 17024.

"Credentialing programs support the application of proven strategies for increasing and measuring the performance of buildings and communities as defined by industry systems such as the LEED Green Building Rating Systems," says Peter Templeton, vice president of education and research of the USGBC.

Current LEED accredited professionals are not effected by the change.

Visit GBCI to register for the LEED AP Exam; find LEED Accredited Professionals; access LEED AP exam records; and manage LEED AP Directory listings.
