Wood Work
DEBUTING AT THIS YEARS INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE FAIR in New York, Jonah Zuckerman's newest additions to his already promising collection include a series of Hovering tables (cocktail, end, nesting, and console); a Hewn dining chair (with felt strapping), table, and sideboard; and a reworking of his classic leaning shelves (a remarkably stable unit that simply leans against a wall). As with all of his previous work, Zuckerman handcrafts each piece using solid wood and can custom work any of his designs. And don't forget to check out the designer's latest installation—Asia Society's renovation in New York. City Joinery, 70 Washington Street, #711, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Info@cityjoinery.com. circle 300
Exotica Revisited
WHEN WE FIRST PROFILED New Delhi-based architect Michael Jansen in 1999, he had just introduced his first furniture collection. The Asian-inspired series was quickly picked up by distributors in the United States and the designs drew on subtle eastern touches. Two years later, Jansen's latest collection, called Dream Windows, builds on the same themes and suggests the idea of looking through windows to "other worlds." "Like Shangri-La, Xanadu, or Atlantis," he says. Each piece features material accents from exotic destinations, such as luminescent white onyx, coconut shell inlay, grass mat, burl wood inlay, meenakari hand-painted enamel, and mother-of-pearl appliqué. Shown here are the Waterfall chair, teak and glass Ganesha dining table, teak and onyx Chand table, and bent-steel Mushroom stool. Michael Jansen, 1422 Chalfont Drive, Schaumburg, IL. 60194. michaeljansen@ vsnl.com.circle 301
French Finesse
RALPH PUCCI DICTATES DESIGN tastes—representing furniture designers Spencer Fung and Chris Lehrecke as well as carpet maven Kate Blee and light sculptor John Wigmore. So it is no surprise that French designer Christophe Delcourt is showing exclusively with the venerable showroom; his work is in perfect harmony with the rest of the team. Delcourt's simple, clean pieces have a quiet elegance that stands strong among the players. Working in dark walnut, oak, and elm, each table, chair, sofa, cabinet, and bookcase have distinctive shape and form as well as style. Ralph Pucci, 44 West 18th Street, New York, NY 10011. circle 307
Happy Talk
ASSISTING ARTIST DAVID HOCKNEY with stage and set designs for opera and ballet was just the beginning for Gregory Evans, who delights in the aspect of color and motion together. The Los Angeles textile designer now creates his own hand-painted, African-inspired designs on natural linen and/or cotton cloth backgrounds with free-hand geometric shapes. The cutout shapes are vibrant and make the most of rich tones. Fifty-five designs in six colors (red, black, blue, gold, green, and olive) represent what Evans calls "fabrics that elicit happiness and joyful movement as they dance about, each pattern having its own curious personality." Available through David Sutherland in Dallas, Houston, and Los Angeles; Ellen Ford in New York; Tui Pranich in Miami; De Sousa Hughes in San Francisco; and Terris Draheim in Seattle. Gregory Evans, 8165 Willoughby Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90046. www.gregoryevans.com. circle 308
