Taking yet another step towards ubiquity, starchitect Zaha Hadid has been selected by the Flemish government to design the future headquarters of the Antwerp Port Authority in Antwerp, Belgium.

Nearly 100 firms submitted proposals for the project before London-based Zaha Hadid Architects won the commission for the $40 million building. The 130,000-square-foot space, occupying the site of a former technical services building, will house about 500 workers following its completion in 2013.

Hadid's concept calls for a 150-foot-tall structure, its façade combining transparent and reflecting glass triangles. Three concrete pillars, housing stairs and elevators, will hoist the building above an existing dockside firehouse. Other components include a sloping roof, an enclosed courtyard and a light-filled underground lobby.

The firm may have another European opening to celebrate in 2013, having been chosen to design the proposed 1-million-square-foot Dorobanti Tower in Bucharest, Romania. If approved, the 820-foot-high tower would house a 365,000-square-foot hotel, casino and convention center.
