Benjamin Moore & Company honors the winners of its second annual Hue Awards

Celebrating color in architecture and design, the Benjamin Moore Hue Awards program recently honored six practitioners for the exceptional use of color in their work. On September 28, at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Center, Benjamin Moore & Co. presented awards to Toronto-based SMC Alsop, New York architect David Ling, Montreal-based Saia Barbarese Topouzanov Architectes, the Tucson husband-and-wife team Ibarra Rosano Design Architects, and Cambridge, Massachusetts architect Gary Wang. Additionally, renowned Italian architect Ettore Sottsass received the Lifetime Achievement award.

For this second annual awards competition, some 200 entries were submitted from all over North America, and judged by author-furniture designer Stefano Casciani, designer Ilse Crawford, design author Marian McEvoy, Chaiken design director Jeff Mahshie, and New York School of Interior Design faculty member Ethel Rompilla. Gary Wang was awarded in the new Social Responsibility category for his uplifting color applications in several neighborhood initiatives that were designed on a shoestring budget. Ibarra Rosano won for Residential Exteriors, while David Ling won for Residential Interiors. SMC Alsop, headed by Will Alsop, won in the category of Contract Exteriors, while Saia Barbarese Topouzanov took top honors for Contract Interiors. Sottsass, whose illustrious career spans the 60s to Post-modernism and the present, was recognized as a visionary whose passion for color in architecture is visible in such projects as his Wolf house in Colorado and his Carlton cabinet for Memphis, the collective of designers he founded in the 1980’s.
