Design Miami Doubles Sales

Over 15,000 people hit the Design District by storm for the Art Loves Design Party.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 1/10/2007 12:00:00 AM

Newcomer Design Miami is showing some muscle. The second annual design event, which coincided with Art Basel Miami Beach December 7-10 in Miami’s design district, drew more than 6,000 attendees and topped $14 million in sales.

With attendance quadrupling since its 2005 premier, the global forum for collecting, exhibiting, discussing, and creating design shows promising numbers. Standout sales included Marc Newson’s Chop Top Table from Galerie Kreo, Marcel Wanders’ Crocheted Chair and Joris Laarman’s clear resin-based chaise lounge from Barry Friedman, a 1964 ceramic totem designed by Ettore Sottsass sold by Galerie Italienne, a Verner Panton chandelier sold by R20th Century, and Poul Henningsen’s Spiral Lamp sold by Dansk Mobelkunst.

Among the industry talents in attendance were Martha Stewart, Philippe Starck, Yves Béhar, Pritzker prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, and 2006 Designer of the Year Award recipient designer Marc Newson.

On December 9, over 15,000 people hit the Design District by storm for the Art Loves Design Party.

"It is truly gratifying to see that the concept of a design fair in tandem with the most prestigious art fair has been a resounding success," says Ambra Medda, director and co-founder of Design Miami. HSBC Private Bank was the Principal Sponsor of the event.
