IIDA Awards Students Scholarships for Sustainable Design

A Savannah College of Art and Design student takes home a $1000 scholarship from the Mohawk Group.

Green innovations by three students took top prizes in the International Interior Design Association's (IIDA) sixth annual IIDA Student Sustainable Design Competition. The awards program -- which divvies out scholarships -- was conceived to encourage environmentally conscious design and thinking. Winners are enrolled in design programs and selected for comprehension, innovation, and consistent use of sustainable principals.

International submissions were at an all time high this year -- clocking in at a 10 percent increase when compared to previous years, and including countries such as Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.

A Savannah College of Art and Design was awarded the top prize. Meghan Woodcock takes home a $1000 scholarship from the Mohawk Group for her Transportable Educational Environments for Disaster Relief. The project Small Apartment earned Byounghwa Choi, a University of Bridgeport student, an Award of Excellence and $500. The $250 Honorable Mention went to Diana Rodriguez of the Interior Designers Institute for her rendering of The Hub, a multi-purpose space home to a coffee shop,
bike station, and telework center.

The winning students, selected by Anita Barnett, vice president at Gensler, and Steven McCollom, associate partner at Gary Lee Partners, will be highlighted on the IIDA Web site and in the spring edition of Custom, the IIDA student newsletter.
