Walk On

edited by Sheila Kim-Jamet -- Interior Design, 2/1/2005 12:00:00 AM

A museum is growing in the Twin Cities. After a year, the expanded Walker Art Center in Minneapolis is reopening on April 17.

In 1999, the Walker purchased the neighboring Allianz Life Insurance Building and signed on the Pritzker Prize–winning Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron to design the expansion, which links to the existing 1971 brick building by Edward Larrabee Barnes and doubles the museum's square footage to 260,000.

The new wing's exterior is clad in embossed aluminum-mesh panels and punched with asymmetric windows. The interior encompasses additional galleries, educational zones, street-level and rooftop lounges, a 385-seat performance space, and two restaurants to be operated by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck.

The Walker reopens with seven inaugural exhibitions, including "The Shape of Time," with works by Reinhard Mucha, Andy Warhol, and Christopher Wool. April 17–August 3; 612-375-7651; walkerart.org.
