USGBC Demos LEED for Homes

Home builders must apply to local providers.

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 8/8/2005 12:00:00 AM

To help spur its first foray into residential projects, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has launched a one year pilot demonstration of LEED for Homes. The building rating system, the Council’s newest, awards environmentally sound residential construction.

LEED-H homes will be designed and constructed to use less energy, less water, and fewer materials. These homes will also provide improved indoor air quality through better ventilation and filtration systems design, and improved controls of pollutant sources.

"The homes market is in line with our mission of transforming the built environment on all levels. These LEED homes will help lower operating costs, increase home value, reduce maintenance issues and improve indoor environmental quality," says Rick Fedrizzi, USGBC president, CEO, and founding chair.

Through a competitive national process, USGBC designated 12 local and regional organizations to provide technical, marketing, and verification support services to builders. These providers will select home builders—who can submit an application online at usgbc.org/leed/homes —and confirm that completed homes meet the LEED rating system's requirements.
