Architects and designers throughout the U.S. are making their entries, and checking them twice, as the February 1 submission deadline looms for the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design 2009 American Architecture Awards.
Built and unbuilt projects designed by domestic firms since January 1, 2007, either in the U.S. and abroad, are eligible for the honors. Reflecting the ever-diverse reach of the A&D community, winners will be recognized for a wide range of projects: interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture, corporate headquarters, skyscrapers, institutions, sports facilities, transportation, airports and residences.

2008 Finalist: Underground, Oklahoma City, OK, Elliott + Associates Architects
Depictions of the winning projects will be featured an inaugural exhibition in Florence, Italy, organized by the European Centre, the municipality of Florence, the province of Tuscany, and the University of Florence's School of Architecture. Following its Italian debut, the show will travel to the U.S. in 2010.
Held in association with the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design, and Urban Studies, and Metropolitan Arts Press, the awards will be organized and curated by the Athenaeum’s president, Finnish architect and journalist Christian Narkiewicz-Laine.
The champs will join a distinguished group of previous honorees, including boldfaced firms like Gehry Partners, Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill that figured among the 66 winners of the 2008 American Architecture Awards.
