The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council sponsored the project for New York's Washington Square Park.

New York’s Washington Square Park, six-foot-tall chess pieces by artist Marjorie Kouns. hold court. The king, queen, bishop, two knights, two rooks and four pawns, were fabricated from multicolored sample chips released by surfacing manufacturer Abet Laminati. The chips wrap each piece with a unique and vibrant skin.

"I’m the queen of public art--Christo can be king," Kouns explains. The project, on view through September 23, is sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

"Abet is more than happy to help produce such a playful outdoor display for the community," says Rosemarie Murphy, Abet media director.
