Droog Design (Mandarina Duck, page 182) is not a traditional design office but a flexible network in which many cutting-edge designers participate. NL Architects (Mandarina Duck, page 182) is an Amsterdam-based firm founded in 1997 by principals Pieter Bannenberg, Walter van Dijk, Kamiel Klaasse, and Mark Linnemann. Past projects include: NL Lounge, Dutch entry for the Biennale in Venice; Y-Building, a study for an office tower adjacent to Amsterdam's Central Station; Y2K+, a study for 85 residences in Hoogeveenlaan and The Hague; and Cinecenter, the renovation of a '70s movie complex in Amsterdam. Craig Bassam (Bally, page 188) began his professional career working with Sydney architect Bruce Eeles after earning degrees in architecture at the University of Sydney. In 1990, he left Australia for Europe, where he participated in an archeological dig in Greece and worked in Austria before coming to New York in 1995. Bassam currently divides his time between New York, Connecticut, and Switzerland. Current projects include offices for an investment bank in London, a residential renovation and corporate headquarters in Switzerland, plus stores in Los Angeles and Lugano. ARO (Qiora, page 194) was established in 1993 by architects Adam Yarinsky and Stephen Cassell. The firm, which handles residential, institutional, and commercial design, has completed a number of projects including a military recruiting station in Times Square and the Henry Dreyfuss exhibition installation at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. Yarinsky received his B.Arch. from the University of Virginia and M.Arch. from Princeton University. Cassell received his B.Arch. from Princeton University and M.Arch. from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard. Rogers Marvel Architects (Kate Spade, page 198) is a New York-based firm established in 1992 by Robert Rogers and Jonathan Marvel, both educated at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Among current projects are The Studio Museum in Harlem and Dartmouth College's performing and studio arts master plan. Completed projects include: the Higgins Hall North Wing at Pratt's school of architecture; the media and design center at Pratt; the Bonakdar Jancou Gallery in Chelsea; and the South Fork Natural History Museum, Southampton, NY. Prior to founding the studio, Rogers spent eight years with I.M. Pei, and Marvel worked with Richard Meier for four years. Christian Biecher (Joseph, page 206) received his architecture degree from the Belleville School of Architecture in Paris. He worked for Bernard Tschumi from 1985 to 1992, assisting on the execution of the Parc de la Villette. His numerous architectural projects include the Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris, headquarters for Issey Miyake, Tokyo, and the Beautyspy cosmetics stores in Munich, Hamburg, Paris, and London. Since 1989, he has taught at the Columbia University School of Architecture in connection with its New York/Paris program. Future Systems (Marni, page 212) practices its innovative brand of architecture on residential and commercial projects. Completed jobs include: Comme des Garçons shops in New York, Paris, and Tokyo; a "floating" London bridge adjacent to Canary Wharf; and residences in London and Wales. Steven Gambrel (Lange Residence, page 216) a graduate of the University of Virginia, established his New York-based interior design firm in 1997. Following his successful collaboration with Liz Lange on her apartment, Gambrel designed Liz Lange Maternity shops in New York and Beverly Hills. Craig Nealy (Maser Residence, page 224) co-founded Dineen Nealy Architects in 1998 with partner Joan Dineen. After receiving his B. Arch and M. Arch from Cornell University, Nealy worked as an associate partner for Kohn Pedersen Fox for 15 years. In 1996, he joined the office of Peter Marino, where he worked on the Louis Vuitton retail concept and built 12 stores for the brand. Two years later, Nealy left to form his own architecture and interiors firm specializing in residential and retail design for such clients as Guerlain, Christian Dior, World Bank, and Nieman Marcus. Projects include a new restaurant in Sotheby's Manhattan headquarters, and additional stores for Louis Vuitton. Studio Sofield (Gucci, page 228) was founded by interior designer William Sofield. A graduate of Princeton University, Sofield established his first New York design practice in 1989. In 1992, he co-founded Aero Studios, a design firm and showroom located in Soho. In 1996, he established Studio Sofield, a design atelier with a portfolio that includes residential, retail, hospitality, and corporate projects. Sofield's L.A. office opened in 1999. Messana O'Rorke Architects (Skin Care Lab, page 234), a New York office founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O'Rorke, practices architectural, graphic, furniture, and product design. Messana O'Rorke has completed a wide range of commercial, residential, retail, and hospitality projects, both in the U.S. and abroad. Robin Elmslie Osler (New York Model Management, page 240), head of her own design firm since 1996, earned her B.Arch. degree from the University of Virginia, adding an M.Arch. from the Yale School of Architecture. Handling both commercial and residential projects, she counts among her clients DNA Model Management, Kate Spade, Marek & Associates, Industria Superstudio, and St. Aubyn Ideasource. Calvert Wright Architecture/Spatial Discipline (Bureau Betak Offices, page 244) was founded in 1998 by Calvert Wright, an architect with degrees from Columbia and Princeton Universities. Before starting his own company, Wright worked with 1100 Architect, Diller + Scofidio, and Rafael Viñoly Architects. Recent and current work includes numerous residential projects in New York and Westchester County, offices for a public relations firm, and an art gallery in Chelsea. Asfour Guzy Architects (New York Modeling Agency, page 250) was founded by Edward Asfour and Peter Guzy in 1988. Handling both residential and commercial design, the partners cite among recent jobs the Art Directors Club and Blue Hill restaurant. Guzy started his design career in Cortland, NY, operating his own studio in Zürich even while teaching at the local Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and earning his B.Arch. degree from Cornell University. Asfour studied at the Architectural Association in London and with O.M. Ungers in Berlin. Qui Ly (Triple 5 Soul, page 254), spent his childhood in his native Vietnam before moving to Canada and earning a B.Arch. from the University of La Val in 1990. After moving to New York in 1991, Ly worked for Roberta Washington Architects and served as head designer for Bond Bond Associates before opening his own firm, Iota Office. His modern yet sensual aesthetic informs his designs for a variety of private residences and medical clinics as well as pending Triple 5 Soul boutiques in Japan, Los Angeles, and Manhattan. Robin Kramer (Varvatos Shop, page 260), educated at Syracuse University and the Fashion Institute of Technology, founded her business—she refers to it generically as a branding design firm—in 1995. Earlier she spent eight years at Calvin Klein where she was vice-president in charge of store design/planning and where, as it happens, she and John Varvatos, now her client, were colleagues. Design director Brad Wilcox, head of his own studio for eight years, lists as his forte retail architecture and brand marketing. Director of project management Christopher Love is in charge of construction and product quality control. Designers Ann Hossler and David Harris completed the team. Christophe Pillet (Rodolphe Menudier, page 264), a Paris-based furniture, product, and interior designer, was educated at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Nice and the Domus Academy in Milan. He worked in the office of Martine Bedin in Milan for two years prior to joining Philippe Starck's atelier in 1988. Five years later, Pillet left to start his own practice, and quickly rose to prominence as an award-winning talent. He has designed bars, private apartments, and retail stores worldwide, as well as furniture and products for leading European manufacturers, including Cappellini, Magis, Fontana Arte, Ceccotti, and Fiam. Tru Partners (Jenne Maag Boutique, page 266) is a multidisciplinary firm founded by designer Laura Kirar in 1999. Kirar, who received her fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, previously designed furniture and interiors for Holly Hunt and Jed Johnson & Associates. She currently holds licensing agreements with Dennis Miller Associates. Contributing project designer D.B. Kim is a senior designer at Perkins & Will's Chicago office and received his degrees from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Jenny Armit Design and Decorative Art (Agent Provocateur, page 268), was established in 1999 by Jenny Armit. Armit has worked extensively for clients in Europe and the United States including Random House, Scottish and Newcastle, and Johannesburg Consolidated. Armit acted as interior design consultant for the AT&T Media and Athletes Pavilions at Centennial Park for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Lena Pessoa (Pucci Milan, page 270) launched her career as a fashion, costume, and accessories designer in Brazil. After moving to Paris in 1987, Pessoa worked in theatrical costume design, created accessories for Agnès B., and started her own clothing line before turning to interior decoration and furniture design. Matthieu Paillard, who teaches design at L'Ecole Superieur de Design de Rheims in France, joined the Pucci project as a designer and technical adviser. Tiziano Vudafieri (Pucci Milan, page 270) founded Vudafieri Partners in 1994. After completing architecture school, Vudafieri worked in the offices of Ettore Sottsass and Cibic and Partners. With his staff of 16 designers, Vudafieri specializes in fashion retail, including the newly-completed Celine boutique in Italy and a showroom for Costume National. Sage Wimer Coombe Architects (Sigerson Morrison, page 272) was established in 1994. Current principals Jennifer Sage and Peter Coombe have completed a number of commercial, institutional, and residential projects. Current work includes the renovation of The Isamu Noguchi Garden and Museum. Sage, a graduate of Harvard and the Yale School of Architecture, worked as a senior associate with Pei Cobb Freed. Coombe, a graduate of Yale and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, previously worked for Richard Meier and Partners.
