Six buildings have made the short list for the prestigious Sterling Prize, bestowed annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Now in its 12th year, the award carries a £20,000 prize (about $40,000) and recognizes the "greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year."
Projects must be in the European Union and applicants must be RIBA members.
Since its introduction 12 years ago, winners have included the Barajas Airport by Richard Rogers Partnership, 30 St. Mary Axe by Foster + Partners, the Laban Centre by Herzog & de Meuron, and Peckham Library and Media Centre by Alsop Architects.
The list includes two projects by David Chipperfield Architects.
"Three very different art centers are in the running: Porto's striking concert hall Casa da Musica, the Museum of Modern Literature in Germany and the re-designed Young Vic Theatre in London," says Jack Pringle, current RIBA president. "They compete with the redevelopment of the late 19th century Dresden railway station by Foster + Partners, a modern park pavilion and visitor centre in Windsor Great Park and the America's Cup building, the centerpiece of Valencia's reorganized old industrial port.
The jury is composed of Tom Bloxham, MBE chair, Urban Splash; Alain de Botton, author and philosopher; Louisa Hutton, architect; Kieran Long , editor, The Architects' Journal; and Sunand Prasad, architect and RIBA president effective September 1. The winner will be revealed Saturday October 6, during a live televised event.
